Drum printers were a significant advancement in printing technology during their heyday, offering a substantial improvement over earlier methods. These impact printers utilized a cylindrical drum, typically the size of a small office wastebasket, which was engraved with the full character set – usually uppercase letters, numbers, and punctuation – arranged in bands across its circumference. As the drum rotated, a print hammer struck the back of the ribbon, transferring the inked character onto the paper at the precise moment the desired character aligned with the print head. This process repeated across the drum’s width, line by line, to create a complete printed page. While slower than modern printers, drum printers were robust and reliable, capable of producing high-quality, crisp text. Their speed was typically measured in characters per second (CPS), ranging from several hundred to over a thousand, depending on the model.

The significance of the drum printer lies in its role as a crucial stepping stone in the evolution of computer printing. Before the widespread adoption of laser and inkjet technologies, drum printers provided a relatively fast and efficient method for producing hard copies, particularly important in a time of growing data processing needs.
