Damage over time (DoT), in gaming and simulations, represents a continuous decrease in a character’s health, mana (magical energy), or armor rating over a defined duration. Unlike instant damage, DoTs inflict harm steadily, ticking away at the target’s resources over several seconds or even minutes. This mechanic adds a strategic layer to gameplay, forcing players to manage their resources carefully and potentially requiring them to interrupt the effect or mitigate its impact. Causes of DoT effects can vary widely, from burning flames and poisonous attacks to debilitating curses and environmental hazards like radiation or toxic gases. Understanding the duration and magnitude of a DoT is crucial for effective gameplay, as it allows players to anticipate the need for healing, defensive buffs, or strategic retreats.

The significance of DoT effects extends beyond simply dealing damage. They can control the flow of combat, forcing players to prioritize targets afflicted by DoTs or to anticipate the need for healing spells or items. DoTs can also be used to punish players for aggressive or careless play, as prolonged exposure to hazardous areas or enemy attacks will inevitably lead to significant health loss.
