File Extension
Extension: SketchUp Material File
Developer: Trimble
Opening .skm files directly isn’t typically done outside of the SketchUp environment. They are inherently designed to be accessed and utilized within the SketchUp program itself. To use a .skm file, you’ll need to import it into your SketchUp project. This is usually done through the Materials panel within SketchUp; the exact method might vary slightly depending on your SketchUp version. Once imported, the materials defined within the .skm file will become available in your materials palette, ready to be applied to your 3D model’s surfaces. You can’t directly view or edit the contents of a .skm file using a standard text editor because of its XML structure and the way SketchUp handles its internal data. Attempting to open it with a text editor will likely result in an unreadable jumble of code.
