File Extension

Extension: Pyxel Image Document

Developer: Daniel Kvarfordt

The .pyxel file is a specialized format containing images created within the Pyxel editor, a popular tool for pixel art. It’s not a standard image format like JPG or PNG, so you can’t directly open it with typical image viewers. A key advantage of the .pyxel format is its ability to preserve crucial information beyond a simple image, including multiple layers, animation sequences, and metadata associated with the artwork. This allows for complex pixel art projects to be saved and reloaded with all their component parts intact, ensuring that the original artist’s intent and work is fully retained. Essentially, it acts as a project file, holding all the elements necessary to reconstruct the image within the Pyxel environment.

Because .pyxel files are intrinsically linked to the Pyxel editor, opening one requires using the Pyxel application itself. There’s no workaround to view or edit .pyxel files using other software. Once you have Pyxel installed, simply open the program and use its file import functionality to load the .pyxel file. This will allow you to access and edit all aspects of the image, including individual layers, animations, and the associated metadata. After editing, you can export your work to common image formats like PNG, GIF, or JPEG for wider compatibility with other applications and online platforms.
